After endless visits to different specialists and various testing, Amelia was finally diagnosed with SYNGAP1-Related Disorders in August 2018. Her family is originally from Colombia but has been in Florida for over a decade. Amelia has a 6 year old sister and new sibling on the way! She is a very happy child, loves music and animals!
SYNGAP1 has been an amazing challenge for the family. It has been a learning process but at the same time we have learned to love her unconditionally and respect the way she is. It has made us reevaluate the importance of life and family
Amelia’s seizures started when she was 3 years old. She has occupational, speech and physical therapy twice a week. She goes to school full time and also has additional therapy at school. Amelia will be in Belgium this summer for horse therapy!

Amelia’s Updated Story – February 4, 2026

Amelia is a 10-year-old girl living in Jupiter, Florida. She is a SYNGAP1 Warrior with a bright spirit, a strong heart, and a joy that fills every space she enters.
Amelia was diagnosed with SYNGAP1-Related Disorders (SRD) at the age of 3, and since then we have been on a lifelong journey of advocacy, learning, and perseverance. Over the years, our family has participated in multiple research studies, because we strongly believe research is the path to better understanding SYNGAP1-Related Disorders and to better treatments for our community.
Amelia has a very busy schedule and works incredibly hard every day. She is in 4th grade at a public school in an ESE program, and she truly loves her classmates and her teachers. She also participates in multiple therapies and activities, including ABA, art therapy, music therapy, speech therapy, OT, PT, and PE class. She continues building new skills and working toward independence through consistency, dedication, and love.
One of Amelia’s newest favorite sports is bowling, which she enjoys every Tuesday. She also participates in Mini Golf once a month. Amelia loves horseback riding, traveling, and playing with her sisters, all of which bring her confidence, calm, and happiness.
Amelia’s personality is joyful and festive. One of her favorite things in the world is wearing latex gloves and playing with water, which always brings smiles (and laughter!) to those around her.
Our family celebrates every achievement, big or small, because every milestone is hard-earned and comes after countless hours of therapy and intervention. Amelia inspires us daily with her perseverance and resilience. She reminds us what true strength looks like and she has also helped shape her sisters, Violeta and Lourdes, who continue to grow in empathy, patience, compassion, and unconditional love through their bond with Amelia.
As a Hispanic family, we are committed to ensuring that Hispanic/Latino families are represented, included, and heard in research, advocacy, and global conversations around SYNGAP1. As Colombians, we continue to serve as active representatives and partners in expanding awareness and increasing participation among Spanish-speaking families across Latin America.
To all researchers and clinicians: thank you for your dedication. Please continue working with urgency, our children cannot wait. Every study matters, every data point matters, and every collaboration brings hope to our community.

Amelia es una niña de 10 años que vive en Jupiter, Florida. Es una guerrera SYNGAP1, con un espíritu brillante, un corazón fuerte y una alegría que llena cada espacio al que llega.
Amelia fue diagnosticada con SYNGAP1 a los 3 años, y desde entonces hemos recorrido un camino marcado por la abogacía, el aprendizaje y la perseverancia. A lo largo de los años, nuestra familia ha participado en múltiples estudios de investigación, porque creemos firmemente que la investigación es el camino para comprender mejor esta enfermedad rara llamada SYNGAP1 y para desarrollar tratamientos más efectivos para nuestra comunidad.
Amelia tiene una agenda muy apretada y trabaja con enorme dedicación todos los días. Cursa 4º grado en una escuela pública, dentro de un programa de educación especial (ESE), y realmente quiere mucho a sus compañeros y a sus profesores. Además, participa en múltiples terapias y actividades, incluyendo ABA (terapia de conducta), arteterapia, musicoterapia, terapia del lenguaje, terapia ocupacional (OT), fisioterapia (PT) y educación física (PE). Continúa desarrollando nuevas habilidades y avanzando hacia una mayor independencia gracias a la constancia, la dedicación y el amor.
Uno de los deportes favoritos más recientes de Amelia son los bolos, que disfruta todos los martes. También participa en minigolf una vez al mes. A Amelia le encanta la equinoterapia, viajar y jugar con sus hermanas, actividades que le brindan confianza, calma y felicidad.
La personalidad de Amelia es alegre y festiva. Una de sus cosas favoritas en el mundo es usar guantes de látex y jugar con el agua, lo que siempre provoca sonrisas y alegría en quienes la rodean.
Nuestra familia celebra cada logro, grande o pequeño, porque cada hito es fruto de mucho esfuerzo y de incontables horas de terapia e intervención. Amelia nos inspira todos los días con su perseverancia y resiliencia. Ella nos recuerda cómo se ve la verdadera fortaleza y también ha ayudado a formar a sus hermanas, Violeta y Lourdes, quienes continúan aprendiendo sobre empatía, paciencia, compasión y amor incondicional gracias al vínculo tan especial que comparten con Amelia.
Como familia hispana, estamos comprometidos a garantizar que las familias hispanas/latinas estén representadas, incluidas y escuchadas en la investigación, la abogacía y las conversaciones globales sobre SYNGAP1. Como colombianos, continuamos siendo representantes activos y aliados, ampliando la concientización y fortaleciendo la participación de las familias de habla hispana en América Latina.
A todos los investigadores y profesionales de la salud: gracias por su dedicación. Por favor, continúen trabajando con urgencia — nuestros hijos no pueden esperar. Cada estudio importa, cada dato cuenta y cada colaboración trae esperanza a nuestra comunidad.
