Laura resides in the metro Detroit area with her husband Nathan and daughters MaryAnne and Olivia. Before COVID, Laura worked as a physical therapist assistant for 12 years. After getting laid off during COVID, her kids became her focus. Olivia was requiring lots of therapy and medical attention, and was diagnosed with SYNGAP1-Related Disorders in February of 2023. The Goretski family became connected with the CURE SYNGAP1 community after doing research on the disease, and is very grateful to have found such a wonderful source of information and support. The Goretskis are participating in any possible research study in hopes of being part of the advancement of treatment.
When Olivia entered kindergarten in a special ed classroom, Laura saw the need to be educated as a parent and began taking all classes she could get her hands on through Michigan Alliance for Families (a free resource in MI for all families of kids with special needs). She is continuing to educate herself on all matters regarding rights of families and students, and what programs and services are available. Laura is not new to volunteering, as she has done a lot of volunteering through the schools. She is excited to provide resources and support to new families as an ambassador and advocate on CURE SYNGAP1’s behalf in the state of Michigan.
